Record Update & New Songs
Hey Everybody,
Just want to keep you updated on the new Popes album.
We finished recording in March, and we were hoping for a fall release, but it looks like the album will actually come out in early '08. So, in the meantime, we have put rough mixes of four songs from the new album up on our myspace page, and would love to know what you think. Check them out, and tell us which one is your favorite.
Also, check out the new tour dates. You can definitely expect to hear some of the new songs at our upcoming shows. We are SO excited to be touring with You Am I again. If you haven't seen them live, prepare to be thoroughly rocked!
See you soon.

Update from the band
Here's what's up with the new album:
Recording is finished and mixing has begun. We expect the album to be released in September, at which point we will hit the road. Until then, we're playing a few dates around the Midwest but otherwise laying low.
Thanks for hanging in there. We'll see you soon.
Sincerely,
The Smoking Popes

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Q: What kind of setlist will you be playing at the Popes reunion show?
Aren't there a lot of songs you won't play anymore?
A: No. There are only a couple songs that we wouldn't consider playing,
and those are songs we didn't used to play very often anyway, so no one
will miss them. We've been practicing through most of the old Popes catalog,
trying to pick the songs that are the strongest. And we don't yet know
what the final song selection will be, but I don't think people will be
disappointed. All the real favorites should be there.
Also, we won't be including any Duvall songs in the set, or any songs
from any other projects. That's not what this show is about. It's about
trying to capture the essence and the energy of a Smoking Popes show,
to play songs which have been waiting seven years to be played again,
to let those songs speak for themselves, and to have fun doing it.

THE RUMORS ARE TRUE!
THE SMOKING POPES WILL BE PLAYING A REUNION SHOW AT METRO ON NOVEMBER
11th.
Here's the band's official press release:
SMOKING POPES
REUNION SHOW NOVEMBER 11, 2005
Seven years after breaking-up, Smoking Popes to Re-group for Flower
15
Chicago, IL - Seven years after breaking up, seminal
Chicago rock band the Smoking Popes are pleased to announce their
reunion performance at Flower 15, November 11 at the renowned venue
The Metro (3730 N Clark Street, Chicago, IL). The line-up for the
band has been confirmed, including brothers and original members
Josh Caterer (vocals, guitar), Matt Caterer (bass), and Eli Caterer
(guitar) along with Rob Kellenberger from the band Duvall on drums.
Flower 15 commemorates Flower booking’s 15th anniversary,
and raises funds for P.L.A.Y. (Possibilities in Life: Art for Youth).
Josh Caterer explains, “We got to know Tim
Edwards and everybody at Flower a few years ago when I started playing
in Duvall. Flower really helped us out and we enjoyed working with
them. So when we heard about Flower 15 and how they were supporting
P.L.A.Y. we knew we wanted to be involved.”
The Smoking Popes began playing throughout Chicago
in 1991 and quickly developed a solid, loyal underground fanbase.
Josh’s crooning vocals melded with the band’s energetic
pop punk musical style, setting the group apart from other bands
in their genre. The band eventually gained national attention, a
deal with Capitol Records, and a spot on movie soundtracks such
as Clueless and Tommy Boy.
By the time the group disbanded in 1998, the Smoking
Popes had secured a small piece of pop-punk history, releasing three
albums and sharing the stage with many legendary artists, from the
Foo Fighters to Cheap Trick, the Violent Femmes to Morrissey.
Now in 2005, the band regroups for Flower 15. Josh
continues, “We’re looking forward to performing together
again. It’s been years since I’ve been on stage with
both of my brothers. When we first talked about playing together
again, I think we were all a little bit reserved. Our attitude was
‘Ok, let’s just try it and see how it feels.’
But as soon as we started playing together, it was so much fun and
felt really natural. If the show is half as fun as our practices,
it will be great.”
P.L.A.Y. (Possibilities in Life: Art for Youth)
began in 2000 when local artists, musicians and teachers partnered
with CAUSES Child Abuse Treatment Centers to provide a creative
and constructive outlet for young victims of abuse. The children
in the program have been referred to the organization due to the
severe abuse they have suffered. P.L.A.Y. is a six to eight week
program that allows the children to express themselves in a positive
environment through inventive arts and music. Flower 15 hopes to
raise over $50,000 to support P.L.A.Y.
Flower
15 (http://www.flower15.com) is a six-night showcase and fundraiser
that will take place November 8th through the 13th at Chicago’s
world famous Metro (3730 N. Clark St., Chicago, IL 60613). Other
artists confirmed to perform include Jimmy Eat World, Ted Leo, and
Promise Ring. Other artists to be announced in the coming weeks. |
